Angelo Palladino
A review by Nick Ellam 04.06.06 - Click here for some pictures I’m glad that the bar wasn’t too busy as my mate Steve said “it’s a most convivial atmosphere” and right enough, it was. In fact, it was perfect for a superb gig. |

| The three piece band made up of : Robert Thompson (fretless bass), Jake Riley (drums) and Angelo Palladino (Dobro, electric guitar, harmonica and vocals) kicked off with a great version of ‘Mystery Train’ written by Junior Parker and covered also by Elvis Presley and Junior Wells. I noticed the fast, pronounced bass guitar throughout that song which I don’t normally like but it worked very well in this instance. |
| Following that was another excellent 50’s rock ‘n’ roll version of a Jimmy Rogers tune called ‘Breakman’, and I’m pleased to see that there are bands who cover this sort of material. The first original song was ‘Two Crows’ from the album ‘Blood,Blues and Bad Dreams’ dedicated to one of the first great bluesmen Robert Johnson and quickly followed with ‘Just Can’t Sleep’. |

just loving it!

The album itself has received great reviews including four and a half stars from ‘Rolling Stone Magazine’ and I have to agree as it is superb. The inclusion of double bass, piano and Hammond organ gives it a great feel and the production is faultless.
For the second set, the bar filled up and no-one was going anywhere till the band had finished. This set had more original songs and some interesting covers, including ‘Personal Jesus’ by Depeche Mode which had some fantastic chord changes. ‘Midnight’ was dedicated to Chet Baker and as you would expect had a jazz feel to it. Coming to the end of the gig the band did ‘Ain’t No Lie’ (another original) only it was extended with bits of other songs including: Ace of Spades, Walk The Line, I Got A Woman, Get Rhythm and Gloria so not hard to guess where some of the influences come from. |
|
The encore was an unrehearsed version of ‘Jonny too bad’ by Jimmy Cliff. The band were very tight, moved effortlessly between styles and were very professional. I will be making the effort to see them again at the ‘Duck and Drake’ in Leeds on the 27th July.
See you at the next gig! |
